Glaciers

 

A glacier is a stream of ice. If there is enough ice it will in fact flow like thick bread dough. There are lots of different types of glaciers, and the word glacier is often used for all types of ice masses on land.

This is a glacier from Greenland. You can see how the ice is flowing out of the from the ice sheet.

We will return to the flowing ice in the section on the formation and behaviour of ice on land. First, we will take a look at two types of glaciers:

  • Outlet glaciers
  • Valley glaciers
