When ice melts
In the last sections we looked at glacier balance. When the climate becomes warmer more ice will melt than new will be created and glaciers will retreat. They are no longer in balance.
This is an example from the Alps:
This is the glacier Tschierva in the Alps – the picture was taken in 1880, more than 130 years ago.
In 2004 a new picture was taken from the same spot at the same time of year. In 124 years the glacier has retreated quite far inland.
